The sunflowers are going by. They hang their big heads,
heavy and laden down with black seeds. Grey squirrels climb their strong
and sturdy stalks, scurrying across the neighborhood gardens to store away winter feasts.
Black capped chickadees light on the flower heads and pick, pick, pick at the seeds.
Mums in the window boxes and ornamental cabbages, and kale.
Bright red maple leaves with green veins and yellow beech leaves litter the pathways.
Indoors is changing as well.
Ironstone bowls full of acorns and tiny pinecones appear on the table top.
Bright orange and cheery little pumpkins sit on a shelf.
Cozy knit blankets appear on the sofa and comfortable puffs cover the beds again.
The windows are closed against the morning chill.
Soups and stews bubble away at the back of the stove and fresh bread is cooling on the cutting board.
There is fresh apple pie for dessert.
The sun sets early and casts it's warm golden light across the floor of the living room.
Evenings are full of candlelight and a basket of knitting at the foot of an old chair.
Welcome autumn
