Seeking Sabbath

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

t

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh,

But through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word:

You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.

Galatians 5:13-15

I am heartily tired of hearing about politics though I don't think I've heard the last of them.

It has become the norm to tear one another apart and call people

vile and foul names in the name of politics.

But, the Lord tells us that if we bite and devour one another

watch out that we are not consumed by one another.

He also tells us to cast the beam out of our own eye first...

So before we start looking at those who are biting and devouring

it may be that we need to look to ourselves.

I have made the decision to abstain from any political conversation.

I don't believe that politics is a lasting solution or a permanent problem.

Only the word of the Lord stands forever.

Blessed is the man who does this,

and the son of man who holds it fast,

who keeps the Sabbath, not profaning it,

and keeps his hand from doing any evil.

Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed,

you will say to this mountain,

'Move from here to there,' and it will move.

Nothing will be impossible for you.

Matthew 17:20

My daughter called to tell me that the sweet little girl fish

she is expecting on Christmas Eve

has a cleft lip and possibly a cleft palate.

There is also a chance that there could be a heart defect as well.

She and her husband will be going into Boston Children's hospital

all day long on Monday for a barrage of tests.

I have been asking everyone I know to storm the gates of heaven with prayer

for our sweet little fish.

I Am the Vine by John Michael Talbot

This is such a beautiful song.

Our Priest shared it with the congregation one Sunday not too long ago

and I thought I would share it here with you.

I hope you enjoy it.

Selah

t

Do nothing out of selfishness or vainglory;
rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves,
each looking our not for his own interests,
but [also] everyone for those of others.

Philippians 2:3-4

I read a post recently about self-care and it got me to thinking...

Yes...we need to care about ourselves.

We need to keep our bodies healthy

our minds and hearts in the right place.

It sure does seem to me that there are an awful lot of people

running around trying to fill an emptiness within themselves with self-care

but that emptiness can never be filled until we turn

our hearts, minds and bodies toward the service of others.

Now...I am not saying that we should not take care of ourselves,

rather that our own self-care is incomplete

until we have found a way to understand

that there are things more important than ourselves

and to put that understanding into action.

Seeking Sabbath

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

t

As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,
Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew,
casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen.
He said to them, "Come after me and I will make you fishers of men."
At once they left their nets and followed him.

Matthew 4:18-20

Imagine...you're just getting through your workday,

fishing away and working your nets, maybe your about ready to take a break,

maybe your feeling a little tired because you didn't sleep well last night...

Along comes this man that you've never seen or heard of before

a total stranger.

He says, "come with me..."

What do you do?

Jump up and go with him at once?

ummm.....

probably not.

Here and now we have the back round story, we know his name.

Jesus.

We know what he's all about for the most party.

Still, we hesitate to drop our nets, we don't follow,

some of us don't even acknowledge his presence.

Imagine the faith it would take to

drop our nets at once and follow.

Prone to wander

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

t

Yet when you seek the Lord, your God, from there,
you shall indeed find him if you search after him with all your heart and soul.
In your distress, when all these things shall have come upon you,
you shall finally return to the Lord, your God, and listen to his voice.
Since the Lord, your God, is a merciful God,
he will not abandon or destroy you,
nor forget the covenant with your ancestors that he swore to them.

Deuteronomy 4:29-31
